Senate Bill 674 has authorized expediting handling of licensure applications for physician applicants practicing in the field of psychiatry or a psychiatric subspecialty. In order for an applicant to qualify for expedited status they must meet the following requirements –
- hold an unrestricted license to practice medicine issued by another state;
- board certification in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) or the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry (AOBNP); and
- meet all eligibility requirements for licensure under § 155.003(e) of the Medical Practice Act.
Applicants who qualify for expedited status will receive priority processing/handling of their applications, mail and inquiries. The application fee and licensure requirements are the same as that for a full medical license. Please refer to the Eligibility Checklist for a list of general requirements for licensure in Texas (please note this list is not a guarantee of eligibility).
When submitting your online application please indicate your psychiatric specialty or sub-specialty on the application. You will also need to submit a copy of your ABPN or AOBNP certificate reflecting certification in psychiatry or an acceptable psychiatric sub-specialty. Certificates can be faxed to 888-550-7516.
